Juhi
Chawla
Juhi Chawla (born 13 November 1967 in Ludhiana, Punjab) is a popular Indian actress. She is best known for her comic ability and her girl-next-door charm which made her one of the leading ladies of Indian cinema in the late '80s and throughout the 90s. She is also known for her famous laugh, and is often called the "Julia Roberts" of India.
Early life
Juhi Chawla was the first child born to Mona Chawla and a Dr. S Chawla. She has one brother named Sanjeev. She was the winner of Miss India title in 1984, later she won Best Costume Award for the Miss Universe contest in 1984.
From beauty contests, she moved into film - with her movie debut being Sultanat in 1986. Her first big hit was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, in which she starred with Aamir Khan. This Romeo and Juliet story of persecuted teenage lovers was an enormous success and launched Aamir's and Juhi's careers.
Career
Her success continued with her first film with Shahrukh Khan titled Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992) becoming a huge hit; they have been friends ever since and own a film production firm (Dreamz Unlimited) as joint partners.
The Yash Raj Camp proved lucky. She accepted a small cameo in Chandni (1989), to later be cast in the critically accliamed Aaina (1993) opposite Jackie Shroff, and then in one of her biggest hits Darr (1993) with Sunny Deol and Shahrukh Khan.
The film Lootere gave her a glamourous makeover from the image of the 'girl next door'. Then her comic talent was discovered with her association with David Dhawan as director for the hit Bol Radha Bol opposite Rishi Kapoor. Her successes include David Dhawan's Deewana Mastana with Anil Kapoor and Govinda, Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi opposite Akshay Kumar, Duplicate with Shahrukh Khan and even a special comic appearance in Andaz Apna Apna as herself.
Her pairing with Aamir Khan has been repeatedly successful with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1989), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993) and later on Ishq (1997) becoming hits.
She has teamed up successfully with Shahrukh Khan too, delivering his first big hit Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and then later on with Darr, Duplicate and Yes Boss.
She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1993 for Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke and a Star Screen Award Best Supporting Actress for 3 Deewarein.
Today she is doing selected films, with interesting roles. Initially shy of serious 'art film' roles, and later openly regretting the loss of roles which went onto be award winning for other actresses, Juhi is now making a comeback in her career with a makeover. She was appreciated recently in Teen Deewarein and My Brother Nikhil and will now be seen opposite Shahrukh Khan in Farah Khan's Happy New Year which is slated for an early 2007 release and opposite Anil Kapoor in Nikhil Advani's Salaam E Ishq: A Tribute To Love which is slated for a November 24, 2006 release.
